Vol. 496 No. 1

Written Answers. - Hazardous Waste.

Ivor Callely

Question:

107 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the volume of liquid radioactivity waste dumped in the North Sea, the Firth of Forth, Liverpool Bay, Morcombe Bay and the Humber Estuary; the impact of this waste; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22021/98]

Information on the disposal of radioactive wastes around the coast of the UK during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s has been gleaned from the archives of the UK Public Records Office and a number of UK Government Departments. In many cases the records are limited to letters and memoranda between Government Departments and the minutes of meetings of committees. In general, while the records refer to particular radionuclides, they do not always specify the quantities involved. In some cases it is not even certain that the material in question was actually dumped. Accordingly, part of the task facing the task force on radioactive dumping is to assess the nature of the documentation and use some judgment when estimating the quantities of each substance that was dumped.
