Vol. 496 No. 2

Written Answers. - Primary Schools.

John McGuinness

Question:

176 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will detail the reply given to various queries raised by the parents of children attending the Kilkenny School Project national school, Kilkenny city, in a letter written to the principal officer dated 25 June 1998. [22237/98]

My Department has received correspondence from parents of children attending the Kilkenny School Project national school, Kilkenny city.

In accordance with the Constitution of Boards and Rules of Procedure of Boards of Management of national schools, the board of management is charged with the direct governance of a school. It is also the employer of the teachers within the school. In the circumstances the resolution of any difficulties which arise at local school level are a matter for the board of management.

Accordingly, it is not appropriate for my Department to intervene in issues which essentially fall to be addressed at local level, as is the norm in matters of dispute between employers and employees. In the circumstances, my officials will be responding to the correspondence from the parents on the above basis.
