Vol. 496 No. 2

Written Answers. - Services for People with Disabilities.

Richard Bruton

Question:

129 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Health and Children if there has been a shortfall of £3.7 million in the funding envisaged in the first two years of implementation of the policy towards an independent future; and, if so, when the Government will make up this shortfall. [22291/98]

The report of the Review Group on Health and Personal Social Services for People with Physical and Sensory Disabilities, Towards an Independent Future, published in December, 1996, sets out the requirements for the development of these services over a five year period at an estimated cost of £50 million. At the beginning of 1997, an additional £3.695 million was provided for these services. Since taking office, this Government has provided an additional £10 million in 1997 and £8.4 million this year. I am not yet in a position to say what funding will be available in 1999.
