Vol. 496 No. 3

Written Answers. - Road Transport Bill.

Michael Ferris

Question:

37 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she will republish the Road Transport Bill prior to the finalisation of the new EU directive dealing with access to the profession of road haulage operator and road passenger transport operator; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [22652/98]

I am happy to inform the Deputy that the Road Transport Bill will be reintroduced at a very early date. Drafting of provisions, additional to the Bill as published in 1997, is now at an advanced stage. Subject to Government approval, I hope to be able to reintroduce the Bill before the end of the year.

The new directive governing access to the profession of road haulage and passenger transport operators was adopted with effect from 1 October 1998.
