Vol. 496 No. 4

Other Questions. - Private Security Firms.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

32 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Defence if he will expand the use of private security firms within the Defence Forces in view of his recent use of private security firms to guard Army barracks; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22729/98]

There are no plans to expand on the number of traditional military duties to be allocated to the private security sector.

Private security firms have been employed to protect Army barracks which have been evacuated by the Defence Forces and have ceased to be military property. In that regard securing non-military State property is not the responsibility of military personnel.
