Vol. 496 No. 5

Written Answers. - Cattle Seizures.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

38 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the position in relation to the investigation into the circumstances of the seizure of a consignment of cattle, which were believed to have been imported from the United Kingdom in contravention of EU veterinary legislation, at the AIBP plant in Nenagh, County Tipperary, in November 1997; the person to whom the slaughter notice was issued in respect of the cattle on 2 January 1998; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23099/98]

I refer the Deputy to my reply to parliamentary questions on 6 October 1998. The position is that investigations into the matter are continuing. The Deputy will appreciate that I am unable to disclose information which might prejudice successful prosecution or prosecutions arising from the episode.
