Question:

204 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the salary scale for prison officers; and the cost of prison pay overtime for each of the years from 1996 to date. [24018/98]

The salary scale for prison officer grade on full PRSI at 1 July 1998 is as follows: £311.11, £324.35, £336.48, £348.62, £360.76, £372.89, £385.02, £397.16, £409.30, £424.74. A long service increment of £435.77 is payable after three years satisfactory service at the maximum of the scale.

The salary scale for prison officer grade on reduced PRSI at 1 July 1998 is as follows: £295.55, £308.13, £319.66, £331.19, £342.72, £354.25, £365.78, £377.30, £388.84, £403.51. A long service increment of £413.99 is payable after three years satisfactory service at the maximum of the scale. Increments are granted annually if the officer's services are satisfactory.

The cost of prison pay overtime for each of the years from 1996 to date in 1998 is as follows: 1996 £18,572,454; 1997 £28,833,591; 1998 £27,650,000, up to 31 October 1998.
