Vol. 497 No. 3

Written Answers - Millennium Projects.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

133 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Health and Children the plans, if any, he has to support the elderly and frail in our society as a particular project (details supplied) to mark the millennium. [25111/98]

Support of dependent older people is an ongoing part of the Government's programme. For example, provision was made for a greatly increased capital programme for older people this year, which will improve the network of health facilities, including specialist units, community nursing units and day care centres throughout the country. There is a need to develop the necessary community support services so that older people and their carers will have better facilities and services closer to where they live. In this regard, I intend to develop these services on a phased basis over the next few years in line with available resources. Specific millennium projects to support dependent older people will be considered as part of this process.
