Vol. 497 No. 3

Written Answers - Housing Density.

Seán Haughey

Question:

137 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans, if any, he has to increase housing density in relation to new developments; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24929/98]

Arising from a recommendation contained in the report of the House Price Study, undertaken by Peter Bacon and Associates, my Department issued a circular to local authorities last May outlining ways in which they can promote increased residential densities in appropriate locations and the safeguards required in promoting greater residential density generally.

I have also appointed consultants to carry out a more detailed analysis of the planning issues relating to residential density. The consultants will be required to develop policy options appropriate to the situation in the light of these considerations and draw up draft planning guidelines. I expect to publish the draft guidelines for public consultation early in the new year.
