Vol. 497 No. 3

Written Answers - School Staffing.

David Stanton

Question:

186 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Education and Science if the psychological service of his Department has recommended that a remedial teacher be appointed, ex quota or otherwise, to St. Mary's high school, Midleton, County Cork; if he will sanction the appointment of this teacher; if not, the reasons for his decision; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24945/98]

I am sure the Deputy will appreciate that there are many competing demands for increased funding in all sectors of education. These demands are considered within the overall budgetary constraints.

I am not in a position at present to allocate an ex quota remedial post to this school. However, my Department has approved the allocation of part-time hours to the school for the 1998-9 school year to cater for curricular difficulties within the school.

I wish to assure the Deputy that the position of St. Mary's high school, Midleton, will be considered when next it is possible to allocate additional ex quota remedial posts.
