Vol. 497 No. 3

Written Answers - Abbey Theatre Development.

Jack Wall

Question:

46 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the response she will make to the proposals submitted to her Department in relation to the Abbey Theatre. [24853/98]

I presume the Deputy is referring to the proposals submitted by The National Theatre Society Ltd. relating to a proposed capital development at the present site of the Abbey Theatre at an estimated cost of £25 million. The society approached my Department in May of this year seeking an allocation of £1.5 million to progress its plans for the building project. The society was informed that in order to consider its application it would be necessary for it to develop a more detailed proposal and in particular to set out how it proposed to fund the full £25 million project. In order that I can consider the matter further I have asked officials of my Department to meet with the National Theatre Society Ltd. to discuss the proposal in more detail.
