Vol. 497 No. 4

Written Answers - Proposed Legislation.

John Gormley

Question:

137 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the degree of priority being afforded by his Department to the publication of legislation to regulate the area of fundraising for charitable and other purposes in view of the concerns expressed by the Revenue internal audit team in 1988, the Costello committee in 1991, the Comptroller and Auditor General in 1992, the Second Interim Report of the Committee of Public Accounts on the 1992 Appropriation Accounts and his Department's internal advisory group in 1996; and if he will make a statement on the matter [24376/98]

The Deputy's question focuses on the priority which attaches to the proposed legislation on the administration and regulation of charities. I have, on previous occasions, indicated to the House that this matter is included in the Government's legislation programme and that progress on proposals in relation to it is subject to the disposal of other priorities. I can confirm that this matter remains a priority item on the work programme of my Department and that it is my intention that legislation will be brought forward to give effect to this commitment.
