Vol. 497 No. 4

Written Answers - Physical Education Facilities.

John McGuinness

Question:

194 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science the status of an application for funding for CBS secondary school, County Kilkenny, for a school gymnasium; if the site has been inspected and costed; and when a decision will be made on the matter. [25328/98]

An application has been received for the provision of a PE hall at Christian Brothers secondary school, James Street, Kilkenny.

The question of providing a PE hall at this school can only be considered in the context of the capital available for post-primary building purposes generally. Because of the huge demand for classroom accommodation in schools throughout the country, I am not in a position at this stage to state when a PE hall will be provided in this particular case.

This application will continue to be reviewed in light of available resources and competing priorities.

Question:

195 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science the status of an application for funding for Loreto secondary school, County Kilkenny, to provide a proper gymnasium and other facilities; if the site and project have been inspected and costed; and when a decision will be made. [25329/98]

The question of providing a gymnasium at Loreto secondary school, Kilkenny can only be considered in the context of capital available for post-primary building purposes generally and priority must be given to the provision of essential classroom accommodation. As a result of the great demand for classroom accommodation throughout the country at present, I am not in a position to state when planning can commence for the provision of a gymnasium in this particular case. However, the application will continue to be reviewed in light of available resources and competing priorities.
