Vol. 497 No. 4

Written Answers - Capitation Grants.

David Stanton

Question:

197 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of pupils enrolled in primary schools; the amount the State contributes by way of capitation grant per student per day; the overall cost of these grants to the State; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25332/98]

The number of pupils enrolled in primary schools in the 1997-8 school year was 460,845.

The 1998 allocation in respect of capitation grants to primary schools was £27,040,000. This included an in the increase in the standard rate of grant of £5 and brought the standard grant to £50 per pupil.
In addition, I have provided for a further £10 increase in the standard capitation grant in the 1999 Estimates, which will result in a standard grant in 1999 of £60 per pupil. This will be the largest ever increase in capitation funding for primary education and, taken with the increase in 1998, represents a 33 per cent increase in capitation funding in primary level since I assumed office.
