Vol. 497 No. 6

Written Answers - Community Employment Schemes.

Phil Hogan

Question:

116 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of persons providing assistance for schools or support for adult or community education initiatives who are employed under community employment; and the discussions, if any, he has had with the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment in relation to recent reports suggesting a substantial cutback in this scheme. [25874/98]

Schools are not required to make returns to my Department in relation to their participation in community employment schemes and, accordingly, I am not in a position to give the information requested by the Deputy. Participation in such schemes is a matter between the relevant school, FÁS and the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment and my Department has no role in relation to their operation or provision. However, my Department is concerned to ensure that schools continue to have access to these schemes and it is in ongoing discussions with the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment on this matter.
