Vol. 497 No. 6

Written Answers - Archaeological Sites.

John Perry

Question:

203 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the reason for the delay for the necessary reports for clearance on a town park (details supplied) in County Sligo in view of the fact it has been lodged for over a year; if the report will be immediately processed in view of the fact that a grant application in another Department cannot be processed until the report is furnished; if a favourable decision will be made in this regard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [25970/98]

The initial formal request by the Department of the Marine and Natural Resources to Dúchas, the Heritage Service of my Department, for a recommendation in relation to the archaeological aspects of the proposal was made in mid-July 1998. That Department was informed in late July 1998 that an archaeological assessment of this proposal would be required and a report of this assessment was received in late September 1998. Dúchas has now informed the applicant and the Department of the Marine and Natural Resources that it is satisfied that the proposed park may proceed subject to certain conditions.
