Vol. 497 No. 6

Written Answers - School Staffing.

Seán Haughey

Question:

230 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a temporary teacher has been replaced with another temporary teacher in a junior infants class in Scoil Chaitríona, Coolock, Dublin 5 which is causing disruption to students, if this position could be made permanent; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25952/98].

The authorised staffing at Scoil Chaitríona in the current school year is a principal and 12 permanent teaching posts. This staffing has been determined by reference to the school's enrolment of 376 pupils in September 1997.

In addition to the staffing mentioned above, the school also has a remedial teaching post, a special class teacher to cater for special needs pupils, a disadvantaged post on account of the school's designation as a disadvantaged school, and a home-school liaison teacher. All of these are permanent posts.

I understand that there has been some recent staff mobility within the school. However, this is a matter for the school's managerial authorities.

Seán Haughey

Question:

231 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason a teacher has been withdrawn from St. Vincent de Paul junior school, Marino, Dublin 3; if he will reverse this decision in view of the disruption it is causing; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25953/98].

On 12 March 1998 the managerial authorities of St. Vincent de Paul infants' school requested the appointment of an extra teacher for the 1998-9 school year. The post was sanctioned subject to the school achieving a minimum enrolment of 408 pupils.

When sanction was given, the school was informed that failure to achieve this minimum enrolment would result in the withdrawal of the post. Unfortunately, the school has not achieved the minimum enrolment required with the result that my Department is obliged to withdraw the post.
