Vol. 497 No. 6

Written Answers - School Staffing.

Jim Higgins

Question:

42 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will allocate additional staff for Jesus and Mary secondary school, Gortnor, Abbey, Crossmolina, County Mayo, and St. Muredach's College, Ballina, County Mayo. [23386/98]

The teacher allocation for second level schools for a particular school year consists of the allocation warranted by the enrolment at the end of the preceding September on the basis of the current pupil teacher ratio together with approved ex-quota and concessionary posts.

School authorities may apply for an increase in the approved teacher allocation to cater for particular circumstances. Applications of this nature are considered under the curricular appeal process and each case is considered on its merits.

I am sure the Deputy will appreciate that additional resources must be considered in light of overall fiscal policy.
