Vol. 497 No. 6

Written Answers - School Staffing.

Michael Ferris

Question:

90 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Education and Science the proposals, if any, he has to remedy problems being encountered by secondary schools (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25886/98]

Jim Higgins

Question:

220 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will allocate additional teachers to Mount St. Michael secondary school, Claremorris, County Mayo, particularly in view of the fact that the 1998 pupil-teacher ratio is not as favourable to the school as that which applied in 1972 [22456/98]

Michael Ring

Question:

242 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans, if any, he has to increase the staffing levels at St. Joseph's secondary school, Castlebar, County Mayo. [26056/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 90, 220 and 242 together.

School authorities may apply for an increase in the approved teacher allocation to cater for particular circumstances. Applications of this nature are considered under the curricular appeal process and each case is considered on its merits. As the Deputies will appreciate additional resources must be considered in light of overall fiscal policy.
