Written Answers - Housing Sites.

Seán Ryan

Question:

157 Mr. S. Ryan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the operational difficulties, if any, with the concept of local authorities providing substantial sites for recognised housing co-operatives for the construction of developments under the shared ownership schemes, particularly in view of the commitment to housing co-operatives in his Department's social housing policy document; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26265/98]

Local authorities may provide housing sites at low cost to assist persons in housing need to provide their own housing. Such housing may be provided either individually or collectively through the voluntary housing schemes, special group shared ownership housing projects or housing co-operatives.

The administration of the low cost sites scheme, including the operation of procedures for the disposal of individual sites or parcels of land, is a matter for the local authorities. Where a local authority has little or no land in a particular area the authority may acquire land for disposal under the low cost sites scheme. If there is a difficulty in relation to any case this might, in the first instance, be raised with the particular local authority involved.
