Vol. 497 No. 7

Written Answers - Employee Consultation.

Liz McManus

Question:

44 Ms McManus asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the Government's position on the directive proposed by EU Commissioner Flynn which would require companies to consult more widely with their staff, particularly in view of the fact that this country has no comprehensive worker consultation rules on its statute books; if Ireland will be supporting the proposed directive; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [25996/98]

The European Commission adopted and published a proposal for a Council Directive establishing a general framework for informing and consulting employees in the European Union on 11 November. The directive was published following the European employer organisation UNICE's indication that they would not participate in negotiations on the issue. The proposal has yet to be considered by the EU Council of Ministers and the European Parliament. However, I intend to consult with our social partners and other interests on this issue.
