Vol. 497 No. 7

Written Answers - Industrial Metrology.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

53 Mr. Stagg asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she intends to transfer non-legal industrial metrology functions, formerly exercised by Fobairt, to the National Standards Authority of Ireland in the immediate future; and, if so, the arrangements being made to ensure the provision of the necessary resources, both financial and human, to allow this organisation fulfil those functions. [26124/98]

As the Deputy is aware, the arrangements for the setting up of Enterprise Ireland provide for the transfer of responsibility for the national metrology laboratory from Enterprise Ireland to the National Standards Authority of Ireland. Detailed discussions have been taking place to complete all the administrative and funding arrangements necessary to bring about a smooth transfer of this function. I understand discussions will be held with the staff concerned to ensure no difficulties arise.

There may be some uncertainty among the workforce while these matters are being completed. The House will appreciate the need for proper consultation and consideration of the issues involved. I have been informed that the arrangements for the transfer are likely to be finalised soon. In the meantime, the work of the national metrology laboratory has continued uninterrupted since the establishment of Enterprise Ireland, while the specific and detailed arrangements for the transfer are being finalised.
