Vol. 497 No. 7

Written Answers - Trade Missions.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

94 Mr. Durkan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the number of trade missions sent abroad in each of the past two years; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [26239/98]

Enterprise Ireland organised trade missions to Saudi Arabia, Austria and Russia in 1997 and to Saudi Arabia, Russia, Portugal and China in 1998. The number of participants on each mission was between six and 25 companies.

The trade missions were designed to help Irish companies achieve and increase business in selected target markets. They provided a unique opportunity for companies to establish high level contacts relevant to the development of their business in the market in question. Trade missions involving Irish companies active in particular markets allow Ireland to make a statement of its commitment to the development of business in those marketplaces. The trade mission complements the continuous work carried on by companies at an individual level. Trade missions are generally used in the early stages of market development and are repeated in those markets where the formula is found to be particularly suitable.

The consolidation of commercial relationships, a key feature of the trade mission and an increased profile for Ireland as a competitive source of supply are the immediate results of such activity. Participating companies are charged a fee by Enterprise Ireland and will only participate in the first instance if they perceive a benefit to themselves. Trade missions will only be repeated where there is sufficient demand from Irish companies and this is the best indicator of their value to indigenous Irish industry as a market entry and development tool.
