Vol. 498 No. 1

Written Answers. - BSE Incidence.

John Gormley

Question:

152 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the reason there has been a recent increase in BSE cases; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26364/98]

The overall incidence of BSE has remained constant over the last three years. As at 30 November 1998, a total of 69 clinical cases of this disease had been confirmed in Ireland during 1998. This compares with a total of 70 cases during the same time period in 1997 and 64 for the corresponding period in 1996.
