Vol. 498 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Lottery.

John McGuinness

Question:

216 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Finance if his Department has considered the geographical spread of lottery machine and scratch card outlets; if his Department's attention has been drawn to the fact that Myshall, County Carlow, is not represented in this network; and if his Department will undertake a review of this operation and request that areas not currently represented in the network be considered. [26287/98]

Under the National Lottery Act, 1986, the number of agents who are authorised to sell national lottery tickets is determined by the National Lottery Company, subject to the consent of the Minister for Finance. The company selects the individual agents for appointment. The geographical spread of agencies and potential turnover are among the factors taken into account in assessing applications. An application from the area mentioned by the Deputy would accordingly be considered by the company in light of these criteria.

The number and location of outlets is kept under constant review by the company.
