Vol. 498 No. 1

Written Answers. - Drug Abuse.

Tony Gregory

Question:

253 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of heroin addicts in the Cork, Waterford and Limerick areas. [26714/98]

The Southern Health Board's publication Smoking, Alcohol and Drug Use in Cork and Kerry, published in 1998, reported a lifetime use of heroin of 1 per cent of the total sample (number 2095). Recent use was 0.3 per cent and there was no current use reported.

However, the number presenting for treatment at Arbour House outpatient treatment programme during 1998 for current heroin misuse was 16.

The number of people being treated for heroin misuse in the Waterford area is eight, while two people are in treatment in the Limerick area.
