Vol. 498 No. 1

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Paul McGrath

Question:

278 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he has included funding for an extension of the mains water supply in 1999 from Drummond Cross to serve Killucan, County Westmeath, and the surrounding areas. [26601/98]

Contact documents for an extension of the Mullingar regional water supply scheme to Taughmon Reservoir, which will serve Killucan, have been submitted to my Department. This scheme, along with all other scheme proposals with the Department, will be considered in the context of the 1999 water and sewerage services investment programme.

Question:

279 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the estimated cost of the Annagh reservoir at Baylin, Athlone, County Westmeath; the timescale for construction; the estimated additional number of households that will be connected to this water supply; the area to be served by this new supply; and the effect this reservoir will have on the existing water supply in the area. [26602/98]

I have approved contract documents for this scheme which is estimated to cost £3.75 million. The closing date for receipt of tenders was 27 November 1998. A tender report and tender recommendation is awaited from Westmeath County Council. Work is expected to commence early in 1999 and it is estimated that construction work will take 12 to 18 months to complete. In addition to rationalising the existing water supply and providing additional storage facilities for Athlone and its environs, the scheme will also facilitate group scheme expansion. In these circumstances it is not possible to indicate the number of additional households that may eventually be served.

Question:

280 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if an application for funding has been made by Westmeath County Council to his Department to provide a public water supply to Glasson and Tubberclair and surrounding areas in County Westmeath; the infrastructural requirements necessary to supply these areas; the estimated cost of providing this scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26603/98]

A preliminary report for the south Westmeath water supply scheme, which includes proposals to serve Glasson and Tubberclair along with other areas in south Westmeath, has been submitted to my Department. The infrastructural requirements necessary to supply the areas mentioned include a water treatment works, pipelines, pumping stations and reservoirs. The estimated cost of the South Westmeath water supply scheme is upwards of £23 million of which £4 million approximately would be required to provide a distribution system to Tang/Tubberclair/Glasson. Given the high level of commitments under the water and sewerage services investment programme, I cannot say when it may be possible to advance this scheme.
