Vol. 498 No. 1

Written Answers. - 1916 Commemoration.

Richard Bruton

Question:

302 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if she will erect plaques in honour of the different battalions involved in the 1916 rising; if so, if these will be erected in the Garden of Remembrance, if she has identified other possible locations for consideration, for example, Arbour Hill; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [26400/98]

My Department's role in relation to the Garden of Remembrance is limited to the maintenance of the site. The Deputy will appreciate that the garden is dedicated to the memory of all those who gave their lives in the cause of Irish freedom and is not exclusively a memorial commemorating those who died in the 1916 Rising.

Policy issues in relation to Arbour Hill are matters for my colleague the Minister for Defence. With regard to Kilmainham Gaol as a possible location the general policy of my Department is to keep the level of formal memorialisation at the site to a minimum in the interests of protecting and enhancing the gaol's impact as an historic monument.
