Vol. 498 No. 1

Written Answers. - Architectural Heritage.

Enda Kenny

Question:

306 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if she has received a request adopted by local authorities in County Tipperary that the re-roofing of the cathedral at the Rock of Cashel be examined; the action, if any, she has taken regarding this proposal; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [26813/98]

I am aware of a resolution adopted by Cashel Urban District Council in September which sought to have the possibility of re-roofing the cathedral at the Rock of Cashel examined. The proposal gives rise to serious difficulties in the archaeological and architectural fields, and it also involves significant issues of necessity, authenticity and cost. I am at present giving careful consideration to the motion in that context and I expect to be in a position to convey my views in relation to it to the council and to the Deputy very soon.
