Vol. 498 No. 1

Written Answers. - Hazardous Substances.

Bernard Allen

Question:

85 Mr. Allen asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if her attention has been drawn to the problems associated with kerosene oil products which are dyed in order to distinguish them from other oil products; and if she will have an investigation made to establish if the dyeing of these products brings about a negative reaction which can cause fire and health hazards under performance. [26678/98]

The adding of dyes to kerosene oil based products is a matter which is governed by regulations which are the responsibility of the office of the Revenue Commissioners.

The National Authority for Occupational Safety and Health is aware of reports from another EU country (Sweden) of health concerns relating to green diesel. However, it is not aware of any adverse health effects from exposure to green diesel in Ireland or of any other particular problems specifically related to the addition of dyes to kerosene. The authority has also pointed out that kerosene is a flammable substance irrespective of whether or not dyes are added. It is not aware of spontaneous combustion or a lowering of the flash point being brought about by the addition of dyes.
