Vol. 498 No. 1

Written Answers. - Job Creation.

Billy Timmins

Question:

87 Mr. Timmins asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the role, if any, she has in job creation. [26809/98]

The State, acting primarily through its agencies, supports the establishment or expansion of businesses, as provided for in legislation, the main expression of which is the Industrial Development Act, 1986, as amended. The primary role of the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment in this area is to contribute to the formulation of Government policy and to ensure the Department and its agencies implement that policy in an efficient and effective manner. The Minister also plays a major role in ensuring that the investment climate and broad business environment is conducive to the establishment and expansion of enterprises and that the labour force is well trained and flexible and operates in a properly regulated environment. I am also concerned to ensure that the labour force is properly incentivised through reform of the tax system.
