Vol. 498 No. 3

Written Answers - Architectural Heritage.

Michael Creed

Question:

136 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the situation regarding the scheme of grant assistance for the restoration of heritage buildings which was to be administered by the local authorities; and if he will ensure that the funds provided for this scheme cannot be hijacked by the local authorities themselves in respect of listed heritage buildings which they may have in their ownership. [27136/98]

Draft terms and conditions for the proposed scheme are currently being drawn up by a group representative of my Department, the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands, the Heritage Council and the City and County Managers Association. The issue of which buildings should qualify for the scheme will be included in recommendations to be made by the group shortly. I hope to announce details of the scheme as soon as possible after that.
