Vol. 498 No. 3

Written Answers - Garda Investigations.

Tony Gregory

Question:

158 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the findings of the post mortem arising from the death of a person (details supplied); if there is a murder investigation under way by the Garda; and the extent of the examination, if any, by the gardaí at the scene prior to the removal of the body to hospital. [27168/98]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that on 23 November 1998 a woman was found lying on the roadway at Summerhill, Dublin 1. This woman was alive, but unconscious with severe head injuries. She was removed to hospital and the scene was preserved and examined by a team from the technical bureau, Garda Headquarters.

I understand from the Garda Síochána that while the full result of the post mortem is not yet available, preliminary indications are that death resulted from severe head injuries consistent with being struck by a motor vehicle. The incident is being investigated, therefore, as a hit and run traffic accident.

Question:

159 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will request a report from the Garda in relation to the action they are taking to deal with the matters arising in correspondence (details supplied) where visitors to a nursing home in Dublin 7 are harassed by a gang of youths; the number of these incidents at this location reported to the Garda; and the action, if any, taken in this regard. [27169/98]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that on Wednesday, 2 November 1998, a Garda patrol car responded to three calls for assistance from the location to which the Deputy refers.

I understand that on the first of these occasions, the gardaí moved on several youths. On the second occasion, the gardaí spoke to the manager of the complex and took the names and addresses of the youths who were on the grounds at this time. I am informed by the gardaí that these youths will be dealt with under the appropriate legislation. A third call was also received and responded to.

I am informed that the divisional officer has directed the community gardaí for the area to call and discuss the problem with staff at the centre. Mobile units have also been instructed to pay particular attention to the area and to deal appropriately with any further incidents.
