161 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will intervene, at this late stage, to ensure that the telecommunications mast in Keel, Achill, County Mayo, is removed as is the wish of the local people. [27200/98]

Question:

162 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of masts erected nationwide in locations which were objected to by the local community; and the reason he did not intervene in any of these situations. [27201/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 160 to 162, inclusive, together.

As to the circumstances which arose in the case of the mast at Kerrykeel, I refer the Deputy to the comprehensive statements I made in the Dáil last night and on the previous day, outlining the particular circumstances which warranted the approach I adopted.

I am aware of varying degrees of objection by local residents to the erection of masts and antennae to support the operations of Esat Digifone in certain areas, and I understand that some objections have also been lodged with the relevant planning authorities and An Bord Pleanála in this regard.
