Vol. 498 No. 3

Written Answers - Bullying at School.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

167 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science further to Parliamentary Question No. 256 of 2 December 1998, the number of school bullying incidences recognised by his Department which have taken place in the past 12 months; the number in the previous 12 month period; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27117/98]

Schools are not required to notify my Department of instances of bullying behaviour in schools. My Department routinely receives a myriad of inquiries and requests for information and advice concerning bullying and a wide range of school management and education issues generally from schools, parents and other members of the public. Many of the contacts are informal and are dealt with speedily while others may require the specialist intervention and advice of my Department's psychological service and inspectorate. Detailed statistics are not maintained concerning the nature of the inquiries and requests received and, accordingly, I am unable to give the information requested by the Deputy.
