Vol. 498 No. 3

Written Answers - School Staffing.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

168 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the number and location of remedial teachers appointed in the north Kildare area in the past six months; the number and location of requests that he has received in respect of these appointments; the number of outstanding requests to be addressed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27118/98]

The Department received 30 applications for remedial teachers from national schools in County Kildare. Two of the posts sanctioned with effect from September 1998 were allocated to provide a service to schools in County Kildare. One post was sanctioned to the boys' national school, Monasterevan, County Kildare, and Scoil Naomh Brid, Lackagh.

Another post was allocated to a cluster of six schools. The remedial teacher based in Grange Con national school, County Wicklow, provides a service to Timolin national school, Moone, County Kildare.

The following is a list of the 27 schools in County Kildare which applied for a remedial service but were unsuccessful with their application: Scoil Naomh Lorcan, Naas, Naas No. 2 NS, Naas An Chloch Mhor, Kildare, Convent primary school, Naas, Scoil Eimhin Naofa, St. Patricks boys NS, Scoil Bhride, Cill Droichid, Scoil Bhride, Milltown, Scoil Phadraig Naofa, Athy, Allenwood boys national school, St. Annes NS, Ardclough, St. Brigids NS, Tacknevin, Bunscoil Bhride, Rathangan, Allenwood girls NS, Scoil Mhichil Naofa, Athy, St Conleths NS, Derrinturn, Scoil an Linbh Iosa, Prosperous, Scoil Na Mainstreach, Celbridge, Ballyroe NS, Athy, Scoil an Linbh Iosa, Ballycane, Scoil Mochua, Aghards, Scoil Ui Riada, Gaelscoil Chill Dara, (Ballysax NS, Suncroft NS, Ballyshannon NS, Two Mile House NS — joint application).
No specific additional allocation ofex quota remedial posts was made to second level schools in the past six months.
I am pleased to advise the Deputy that I recently announced a major initiative to tackle education disadvantage at all levels. As part of this initiative, I have arranged for a remedial teacher service to be made available to all primary schools with effect from September 1999. Mainstream schools with a pupil teacher ratio of below 10:1, and which currently have no service, may apply for a service where they can demonstrate the particular needs of their pupils.
As part of the same initiative I have arranged for a remedial service to be made available to all second level schools in the free education system for the coming school year.
