Vol. 498 No. 3

Written Answers - Air Services.

Question:

35 Mr. Coveney asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the plans, if any, she has to increase investment in Cork airport in view of the increasing throughput of passengers. [26976/98]

Arising from significant growth in passenger throughput in recent years, Aer Rianta has planned a total expenditure of £28 million for Cork Airport under a five year capital expenditure programme ending in the year 2002. As part of that programme, approximately £10 million has been invested during 1998 in a range of infrastructural facilities, including the overlay and widening of the runway, provision of new cargo warehouses, extension of apron space, provision of new outgoing baggage facilities and check-in desks, together with additional car parking facilities and the upgrading of the electrical systems.

Traffic at Cork Airport is expected to increase by almost 10 per cent this year, with the final outturn at year end anticipated to be in the region of 1.3 million. The growth in traffic is being matched by Aer Rianta's continued investment in necessary facilities at Cork Airport, designed to keep pace with traffic demands and to act as an incentive to new economic activity at the airport and in the Cork region generally.
