Vol. 498 No. 3

Written Answers - Nuclear Safety.

Liz McManus

Question:

51 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the number of occasions on which the ministerial committee on nuclear safety has met since the beginning of 1998; the decisions, if any, it has made in relation to the campaign against Sellafield; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [26983/98]

There have been four meetings of the ministerial committee on nuclear safety since the committee was established in February this year. The committee has adopted a work programme encompassing a wide range of nuclear safety and radiological protection issues, including the campaign against Sellafield.

In its meetings to date, the committee has discussed a number of issues encompassed in its work programme, including the UK Environment Agency's proposed decision in regard to the variation in the Sellafield discharge authorisation and its proposed decision in regard to the mixed oxide fuel fabrication plant. The committee also discussed Ireland's approach in regard to the OSPAR strategy on radioactive substances and reviewed progress in regard to the Dundalk residents' legal case against British Nuclear Fuels.
