Vol. 498 No. 3

Written Answers - Registration of Professions.

John Gormley

Question:

131 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Health and Children if he has satisfied himself with the registration requirements for designated health and social profession and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27158/98]

The latest initiative on statutory registration commenced in 1995, when officials of my Department held a one day information workshop on the Statutory Registration of Certain Designated Health and Social Professions. The workshop provided a forum for discussion on the possible introduction of legislation which would allow for the regulation and control of a number of professions.

Following this workshop, my Department circulated a consultative document to the professional representative bodies which had attended. Comprehensive replies were received from these bodies which served to highlight the many fundamental differences between the bodies as to how any system of statutory registration would operate.

With a view to progressing the issue, my Department is now examining models from other countries which may have encountered similar difficulties in developing a statutory registration system.
