Vol. 498 No. 4

Written Answers. - Lockerbie Bombing.

Dan Neville

Question:

135 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he has made contact with the Libyan government regarding the handover of suspects of the Lockerbie bombing to the Dutch government. [27670/98]

I have not had any direct contact with the Libyan Government regarding the handover of the suspects in the Lockerbie bombing. However, the issue of the handover of the suspects arose, in general terms, in discussions which senior officials of the Department of Foreign Affairs had last July with Libyan officials, in the context of the continued application of UN sanctions against Libya. The Libyan side provided some information about the efforts which were being made to resolve the impasse. The subject also arose in discussion when the Irish Ambassador to Libya called on the Libyan Foreign Minister on 11 October when the Minister explained the position of his Government in the matter. I am aware that, since then, there have been a number of developments involving the UN Secretary General, and I underline my support for the efforts which he is making and my hope that these will lead to a satisfactory outcome.
