Vol. 498 No. 4

Written Answers. - Public Order.

Tony Gregory

Question:

382 Mr. Gregroy asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will request a report from the Garda authorities in relation to the serious harassment of residents in Dublin 7 (details supplied) by gangs of youths and the failure of the Garda to respond quickly to the problem. [27502/98]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the residence of the person referred to by the Deputy is located adjacent to a laneway and across from a public park. There is a boxing club close by, which attracts many youths to the area.

I am also informed that the Garda have contacted Dublin Corporation regarding the security of the park at night, and the possible erection of security fencing. Arrangements have also been made for a Garda to speak to the supervisors of the boxing club.

In relation to patrolling arrangements in the area, I am informed that the North Central Division has ten uniform and four plain clothes patrol cars, and three motorcycles patrolling the area on any given day.

The Garda authorities have also informed me that a Garda inspector has been appointed to call and meet the person referred to by the Deputy, to address the issue raised in his letter.
