383 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of cases in which a person was convicted for buggery in each of the years from 1996 to date; the number of charges of buggery in each case; and the sentence by the courts in each case. [27507/98]

I wish to inform the Deputy that the Annual Report of the Garda Síochána, for the years 1996 and 1997 indicate the following statistics in relation to buggery:

1996	34	33
1997	80	72

In relation to the other information sought by the Deputy, I am informed by the Garda authorities that the information sought is not readily available, and could be obtained only by the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of staff time and resources.
