Vol. 498 No. 4

Written Answers. - Youth Services.

Austin Currie

Question:

406 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if he has received a submission from the youth working group of the Blanchardstown area partnership in relation to a programme (details supplied) for young people at risk; and, if so, if he will make an early positive decision on the matter. [27702/98]

An application for funding for an early school leaving programme has been included in the plan submitted on 19 October last by the Blanchardstown Development Group established under the young people's facilities and services fund. An assessment committee, chaired by the Department of Tourism, Sport and Recreation, is currently evaluating the plans submitted by the 13 development groups in the local drugs task force areas, with a view to making recommendations to the Cabinet Committee on Social Inclusion, chaired by the Taoiseach, Deputy Bertie Ahern, early in the new year.

As part of the assessment process, the committee is having a series of meetings with the development groups to allow them to present the plans, which encompass 300 projects and to examine, in depth, the various elements of each plan.

Given the very significant work load involved in the process and the need to ensure that the plans are as strategic as possible having regard to the aims of the fund, it will be early next year before any decisions are taken by the Cabinet committee in relation to funding for specific projects.
