Vol. 498 No. 4

Written Answers. - Diplomatic Representation.

Willie Penrose

Question:

41 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the plans, if any, he has to expand diplomatic representation in South America. [27581/98]

P. J. Sheehan

Question:

65 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the proposals, if any, he has to appoint new resident ambassadors abroad in the coming 12 months; and, if so, the countries involved. [27743/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 41 and 65 together.

I am conscious of the small size of Ireland's diplomatic representation overseas relative to our increasing engagement in many parts of the world. I would, therefore, like to see a phased increase in our network of resident missions over the coming years. I am keeping under regular review my priorities for achieving this, including in South America. I have to bear in mind the financial constraints which we face.

I am not in a position to indicate specific plans at this stage.

With regard to the appointment of new ambassadors to existing missions, I will be considering recommendations to the Government in due course.
