Question:

60 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs his views on the suggestion that Ireland might rejoin the Commonwealth. [27737/98]

To date, serious consideration has not been given to joining the Commonwealth and it would be premature to do so in advance of a debate on the issue. I would suggest that evidence of significant support for a change with regard to our relations with the Commonwealth, together with clear evidence of the likely benefits of such change, would be prerequisites for any policy reconsideration in this area.
