The visit was arranged by Enterprise Ireland to introduce over twenty Irish companies to potential strategic partners. I led delegations to meet Dell, 3 Com, Hewlett-Packard and Dallas Semi-conductor Inc. I also took the opportunity to meet IDA clients, Motorola, Fruit of the Loom and Apple Computer. In addition, I addressed 300 corporate and other guests of Enterprise Ireland at a function in San Jose.

Attendance at Izmir International Trade Fair and meeting with Istanbul business-employers representative association. I also met representatives of Eczacibasi which has invested in Ireland.

I met with a range of financial services and other companies, including Banco Populare di Milano and Credito Italiano to encourage further Italian investment in Ireland. I also met with Italtel (the largest Italian manufacturer of advanced systems for telecommunications) to encourage them to consider further niche telecommunications suppliers from Ireland. During the course of my visit I had meetings with the Cardinal Secretary of State of the Vatican and Pope John Paul II to discuss a range of matters including Northern Ireland.

I attended an Austrian EU Presidency Ministerial Conference on the theme “Better Regulation Serves Employment”. I also had meetings with representatives of the Austrian Social Partners. No companies were visited.

I addressed the 8th European Banking Congress in Frankfurt. I met a number of companies to encourage them to establish or expand in Ireland. Among these companies was Kostal who recently announced a major expansion in Ireland. On the return journey, I met with representatives of Royal Ten Cate in the Netherlands to press the case for retention of employment in Atlantic Mills, Longford.
