Vol. 498 No. 4

Written Answers. - Port Developments.

David Stanton

Question:

99 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he has received a study on Kennedy Pier, Cobh, County Cork, commissioned by Cobh Fisherman's Association; if so, his views on the proposals in the study; the plans, if any, he has to make funding available for the upgrading of the pier; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27327/98]

I have received a copy of the study referred to by the Deputy. I am advised that Kennedy Pier is the property of the Port of Cork Company and falls within that company's jurisdictional area. Under the Harbours Act, 1996, the port company is statutorily mandated to take all proper measures for the management, control, operation and development of its harbour and to provide such facilities, services, accommodation and land for ships, goods and passengers as it considers necessary.

I am advised that the Port of Cork Company has indicated to the Cobh Fishermen's Association that it could make no commitment to the funding of any future development of Kennedy Pier. Port development plans are subject to ongoing review and any development of port property or facilities, irrespective of the funding mechanism, remains a matter for the port company to determine.
