Vol. 498 No. 4

Written Answers. - Fishing Fleet Modernisation.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

101 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the plans, if any, he has to provide for the further renewal of the whitefish fleet in order to secure the economic base of communities, including that represented by the Foyle Fisherman's Co-op in Inishowen, County Donegal, which has a singular dependence on the sea and to ensure that fishing communities have access to a safe modern whitefish fleet. [27408/98]

The programme for the renewal of the whitefish fleet which I launched in June involves a package of measures to provide for the renewal and modernisation of the whitefish fleet. I recently announced successful applications for grant and for the introduction of 31 new vessels, 16 of these vessels will be based in Donegal. I will be announcing grant approvals for the introduction of modern second hand vessels into the fleet and for vessel modernisation shortly. I have also announced three rounds of approvals for support for safety equipment to date. I consider this vessel safety equipment scheme of vital importance. The aim of this scheme is to encourage vessel owners to fit out vessels with specific on-board safety equipment. Improved safety equipment on board vessels can play a vital part in the ongoing battle to protect life at sea. The closing date for applications for safety grants is the last day of each month and I will ensure that decisions are taken quickly.

The programme, which already supports investment of £67 million is the biggest ever single financial initiative in the whitefish sector. The objective of the programme is to increase competitiveness, safeguard jobs in our coastal regions and preserve sustainable fishing as an economic way of life in these communities. I am confident the programme will deliver on these objectives.
