Vol. 498 No. 6

Written Answers - Tax Allowances.

Michael Finucane

Question:

43 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for Finance if tax allowances other than personal and PAYE allowances will continue to be paid at the standard rate for the foreseeable future; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27937/98]

In budget 1999 earlier this month I announced that the basic single and married personal allowances and the PAYE allowance would be standard rated as part of the move towards tax credits. These allowances represent, in tax terms, the bulk of personal allowances in the system. The position regarding the remaining personal allowances will be considered in the context of future budgets but it would be my intention to complete the move to standard rating as soon as possible.
