Vol. 499 No. 1

Written Answers. - EU Directives.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

156 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the resources and personnel available to transpose EU Directives into Irish law; if she has satisfied herself with the rate of progress of this implementation; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1621/99]

The people engaged in transposition in my Department normally do so as part of their duties in related work areas. Depending on priorities within areas and in the Department as a whole, the number engaged in transposition at any one time varies. However, I am satisfied that, within the limits imposed by the Government's policy to control public service numbers, and within the extensive work programme set out in my Department's strategy statement sufficient resources and personnel are available for transposition of EU Directives into Irish law. I regard the rate of progress of transposition as adequate.
